Thumbs up Re: Here's a Mini 8 LED flashlight $5 shipped

I picked one up when I was in China earlier this year. It is a good deal at $5 shipped but was a better deal for $2 cash.

What colour was the body when you purchased this light?

Was it silver like that shown in the picture???

Sorry if this is off-topic, but how does the Xnova 8 compare to the Ghost II? I have a Ghost II I am pleased with but that has 12 leds. Might be longer runtime with the Xnova 8? If so then this is a good deal.

I believe all the Xnova 8 models are twisty.

More important, do the battery go in normally or backwards? The ones in which the battery goes in backwards are the newest model and much brighter.
Here is a thread with both pics and beamshots, both models:
    http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/show...ighlight=xnova

Here is where I got mine. Only the 8led version has the new boost circuit. The 5 led models are still quite dim.

There are different versions of both the XNova and the Ghost so you need to be sure which one you are getting. The brightest XNovas seem to be the brightest of any of the small 1xAA LED cluster lights. The Ghosts seem to drive the LEDs less hard resulting in less brightness, but more runtime and a bit larger flood.

Regarding the pic that the original poster linked to... I do own or have owned about 8 of the 8 LED Xnovas and none of mine had that lip that goes around the bezel so I'm not 100% sure that is an acutal XNova. Back when the 5 LED Xnovas were the ticket, there was a company building XNova knock-offs.

Personally, I'd pop the extra could $$ and be sure to get a good XNova if good brightness in a cheap small package is what you want.

The light is the old xnova 8led. See this thread, '8LED 1AA "Xnova" New vs. Old.' Here's ledmuseum's review:
    http://ledmuseum.candlepower.us/second/8led1.htm

It should make a good kid's light. Not too bright, good runtime, and cheap enough that it's OK if the kids lose or break it.

The new xnova 8leds are twice as bright as the Ghost II's, but only a 2 hour runtime to 50%. The Ghost II's have a 6 hour runtime to 50%, and better build quality, according to flashlightreviews:

    You're right, altoon.

Well, now that we've established that it is an XNova, I think the lower output/longer runtime of the light you ordered will be perfect for a child. I know my kids love the XNovas and I find myself wishing I had one with less output. Actually, I like the original 5 LED XNovas but all of mine have been modded by either myself or others.

I ordered a few of these from of course Lighthound and they are great. There was an issue with one of the light having a LED out but honestly it seems brighter than the other ones with all the LED's working, weird. In any case I gave a couple to my nephews and parents for pocket/purse lights and kept a couple for myself. I like them a lot and pretty dang bright for an inexpensive light!

I should add I brought the dead LED issue to Lighthounds attention, just to let him know, he of course offered to replace it but I didn't mind because it did seems as bright/brighter than the rest. I should have a little better runtime with one less LED right?

I have had multi LED flashlights that had one or more burned out LEDs. It is not a good idea to keep using them with burned LEDs.

    Refer to this post:
    http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/...99&postcount=6

The same thing happened to me with 2 different flashlights, and I soon ended up replacing all the leds in the lights.

If you're ordering the light, be aware that it is the old version. It is not very bright.

Lighthound and qualitychinagoods carry the new, bright version.

Yeah... I'm sure it's 'good enough' for most uses. Even the old 5 LED XNovas were quite usable, provided you got a good one.

The bright ones have the spring in the head and the battery goes in backwards.
