I would still very strongly recommend an alternative browser such as FireFox or Opera instead of IE. Because of the activex technologies IE still is a magnet for spyware/malware. You are much less prone to getting infected having an alternative browser installed and set as default.

The only patch that will truly fix IE is something that will delete it and block it from reloading itself.

I got a new laptop a couple of years ago, and as soon as it connected to the internet there was this massive vibration as every piece of spyware on the internet found it and loaded to it at the exact same instant. I'm still trying to get it all cleaned out.

As a stopgap measure I tried moving IE to another folder. The next time the computer conneced to the internet, the spyware discovered that there was no IE, then searched the internet for IE, found it, downloaded and installed it.
