win2k terminal services problem

I moved my win 2k terminal server off my main ups and onto a new separate ups today. I decided to hook up the signaling cable for it.

Here is where the problem started.

I've got the server setup with no mouse/key/monitor. I access it in terminal mode.

I can't configure the ups in windows' control panel. The power option is gone entirely. Apparently this is by design. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243651/en-us

I want a workaround. I need one. It works fine if you local at the console.

I have searched google/etc and have no answer.

Ideas?

APCUPSD

From my understanding this works rather well and is quite feature rich. APC will come with some software (in which I didn't install) but depending on your model this might be your ticket. Works on Linux,BSD, and Windows. You might need to create it as a service so that you will not have to log in to get it to start but that is quite trivial with srvany.exe (granted the application needs to be coded in a half-decent manner but I digress :). None the less, this will even talk through SNMP and communicate with even the bigger APC ups units (Symmetra).

*Edit*

I know MS says the Icon is not there but have you tried...

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL ups.cpl

... sometimes it may actually work they just tried to make it invisible.

*Edit*

In any event I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Shaman

I tried the command line thing. No luck. They've got the door shut pretty tight so far.

I have already looked through the registry and the group policy also.

I will look at the 3rd party stuff.

Thanks.

The above are good options as well. Of course security would be a risk for VNC type connections over the internet. So to curb such concerns you might want to look at an SSH server and tunneling the VNC connections through it to ensure encrypted communications. Just food for thought as it was not stated if this is a personal or work server. Also TightVNC is another popular option for remote administration and it does encrypt the passwords sent just not the data itself.

Sincerely,

I'm not completely sure, but I was under the impression you could use Windows Remote Desktop. Not sure if you have to pay for it, but on the Dell server I use it on, it seems a tiny bit faster than VNC I have tried out on other computers.
