Default Win XP file/printer sharing broken

Boy boy, I got real smart.

I deleted the extra built-in accounts that come with XP.

Now, file and printer sharing is broken.

    Help!

And an un/re install of f/p sharing didn't help.

A lot of things will screw up file sharing. Did you disable any services?

I don't have many user accounts on this new XP install and I don't see anything that looks like it has to do with file sharing.

Here are my accounts. The last one has to do with some software I installed:

If you are a member of a domain, that might change things. I don't know because I don't have a domain.

    turbodog, check this setting:

    Control Panel
    Network Connections
Right click on your local area connection
    Properties
    Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    Properties
    Advanced
    WINS tab
    Netbios Setting
Enable Netbios over TCP/IP should be checked

    The accounts I have are:

    administrator
    aspnet
    guest

I checked the netbios over tcp/ip and it's ok.

Also, I can get OUT onto my network. I can connect to a win2k server and a win98se desktop.

These computers can see my main pc, but when they access it they get a login/pass prompt. Nothing I put in there works. Everything is rejected.

But, get this, remote desktop into it still works.

I'm on a standard 192.168.1.x scheme. Nothing out of the ordinary. I have no 3rd party firewalls anywhere, and my win xp one is off.

And, as far as I remember, I did nothing else to it.

I am _NOT_ reloading xp to fix this, but I really need to share my printer also.

Security is different for XP Home and Pro. I never used Home and I only get Pro networking up and running by playing around with it.

It makes a difference if "simple file sharing" is enabled, which is the default. I always disable it. This doesn't exist in XP Home.

I always have the same accounts/passwords on both machines. When you try to access other machines you need to use a name and password that exists on the other machine. I think if you are logged on locally with a name and password that also exists on the remote machine, you won't be asked for a name and password.

Yeah, I've sort of moved beyond these issues though.

    FIXED!!!!

I hit MS's knowledge base and got lucky.

    group policy problem

    gpedit.msc
    computer config
    windows settings
    security
    local policies
    security options
network access: sharing and security model for local accounts

I changed this from guest to classic

    Worked immediately, didn't even reboot.
