Please help.

The whole hotlips heatsink is negatively charged in my maglite and is shorting out the led:rant:

Does the base of the luxeon need to be insulated? I have Artic Alumina do I just coat the base of the led to insulate it? I'd rather have metal contact for good thermal contact, but i guess i'll just put a big glob on the heatsink to avoid this. Any ideas?

What setup are you using? What color led? What driver?

If it's DD with a white/blue/green/cyan led then you have nothing to really worry about.
If you are using red/redorange/amber or are using a driver/circuit then you will have problems.

I use AA epoxy and wipe it over the base of the luxeon, then dab a little in the center of the HS, press down and twist just a bit. That usualy works. If you want to be postive, put a thin coat on the luxeon slug, and let it cure first, then epoxy it down.
