I don't think that anybody thinks it's a real alien in the jar 
But even so it's appearance in his attic is still a great mystery!
Or you could take it to mean that the military just discovered that they left a real alien in a jar in someones attic and forgot where and so planted several fake ones so that when the real one is found nobody will believe that either
