hum... the surefire helmet light seems to be the first.. .i've always thought it was perfect for a headlamp to be run off of one 123 or a rcr123... so if they allowed a headlamp to work 3v-4.5v... i think its the lightest most dense cheapest solution...

Me too, have been looking for a single cell, small headlamp for a long time.
I have difficulty thinking of myself wearing a big heavy headlamp or even a headlamp with separate battery pack.

Don't forget HDS! Might be out of your price range though:

Thanks for the URLs, funny you mention, I am aware of the HDS, had been
waiting for that HDS85XTGR.

Thanks folks for all the informations.

If you haven't tried the River Rock 2AAA headlamp from Target yet, I'd say pick one up and your search might end before it starts. VERY lightweight and small (perhaps lighter and smaller than a 1CR123 would be), has high and low, decent output with both throw and spill and good battery life for 2 AAAs (6+ hours on high, 20+ on low). It's not "Surefire" build quality, and the tint errs toward blue, but it's really not bad. Cost for you...$15!

Here's the flashlightreviews link:

Note that I took off the top strap (its easy to do, with no cutting) and it's even more compact and still very comfortable.

I made one.
It was welded from aluminum sheet metal and was about 3 times heavier than I thought it would be. There were other problems with it. It never really worked out.
