IIRC all green diode pumped LASERs use YVO4, YAG can be and IS used to the same effect, but is less efficient. IIRC YAG is beter suited in LARGE pumping chambers as it is more themperature stable. It is the KTP that is REALLY touchy and is less efficient. From what I have heard on large systems (30W SHG doubled marking lasers) the tuning is critical. the pump chamber in these systems used a diode pump system with diode stacks around the YAG rod (it WAS actually a YVO4 rod, but we called tham all YAG rods anyway), would output 150W and the green output would max out around 33W. So you can see the losses here are greater then the 808nm to 1064 conversion.
