Aloha, Don--I hope you're enjoying your R&R in Hawaii. If you find half the inspiration on Maui that you seem to have gotten from titanium, then we're all in for a helluva treat when you return! Seriously... I don't know what it is about you and Ti, but it seems to have raised your already very formidable flashlight game to a whole new level, especially in the area of design. But I digress...

You know, one of the great joys of a McGizmo light--apart from the fact that it IS a great light--is that mere mortals can actually buy one. No vaporware, no "I-only-made-10-of-'em-ware" -- just put your name on an order list and for a reasonable price, anyone can own an Aleph or PD. Or, at least that was the case until Ti.

Given the expense of Ti, it is understandable you'd want to keep your sales estimates very conservative, since it represents a considerable financial risk for you. The downside, as we saw with the McLux III-T, is that many would-be buyers are left disappointed and near desperate, and the rarity of the light creates an insane market for resale (I've heard of 4 figure offers), which seems like the antithesis of what you're about.

SO... how about a pre-paid pre-sale for future Ti creations? I'm not talking about vaporware--these would be lights you intend to build and sell, and prepayment would eliminate the financial risk of estimating sales to you, while allowing anyone who wanted to buy a light to buy one. I'm sure that virtually NO ONE here would have a problem paying you in advance, knowing that it assured them the purchase of a McGizmo Ti light.

charlesn, I must disagree with you here. Builders often take a tremendous amount of heat on pre-orders. Unforeseen circumstances almost always cause a delay, which causes a bunch of people to start sending posts, PMs, and emails saying, "You've got my money, I want my stuff."

Even Don is subject to these uncertainties and I can see why he doesn't want to deal with the headaches of pre-sales. I don't think he would even let things get as bogged down as the Nano or the BlackBird, but those builders had to put up with some downright mean inquiries from pre-payers. Not to mention Don having to stress about having taken people's money and not delivered yet--which he would.

I think we should just be happy that Don must have failed Econ 1 and doesn't sell his lights at the market clearing price

Personally, I wouldnt mind pre paying one of Don's light. I wouldnt mind the wait. And I wouldnt send PMs and emails inquiring any time table. I will instead give Don all the time he needs to finish the light, esp since it is worth the wait.

Anyone who has not done business with Don might find this strange. So heres some background why I feel this way. I joined CPF Sept last year. One of the first light that immediately caught my interest then was the McLux IIIPD in chrome. But since I am a newbie, and dont even have a PayPal account, I was at a lost on how to get one. I was quite hesitant to contact Don, what with the stature he has here in CPF as the premiere light builder and all.

After almost a month, I decided to take my chance. I sent Don an email and told him about my desire to get one of his lights and if he will accept a TT and explained my difficulties. Know what? The first thing he did was ask for my addy and he SENT OUT THE LIGHT. No questions asked!! I was dumbfounded. I had the creeps! I simply couldnt believe that I would still meet someone like Don at this age and time. At least not to a newbie like me who only had a post count of 20 then, and without even yet receiving my money. And heres more. We both underestimated the charges of doing a TT transaction. The money I sent ended up short of $5. Don adviced me not to bother sending the balance, esp since it will take $20 to send another TT. And heres even more. Don sent me a first light, a kickass proto HD 45 by mistake. I emailed Don about it and offered to ship it back. Instead Don told me to keep it and not to sell it. Of course I gladly took up his offer Don taught me one thing I will never forget, and that is TRUST. And he showed it all in his actions during our FIRST transaction. A transaction with a relatively unknown newbie. I eventually paid my balance of $5 when I ordered the Ti bezel btw. All this point to the fact that Don is world class I have never told anyone about this story till now, but felt that I need to in order to justify why I wouldnt mind the wait, and why I wouldnt mind even if Don has my money for any lenght of time. For Don, I will do anything. And I am sure alot of other people her would too

Yes. Agreed. No more words needed on this one.

Personally, I wouldnt mind pre paying one of Don's light.
I guess none of us would mind ... but Don does not like it, and I think we should accpet his position on this issue, even if we'd like it to change in order to allow more lights being built at times.

There is a type of perfection that transcends the quest for lumens. Buying a $250 1-cell light for "lum factor" is like buying a $250 single malt Scotch for the alcohol content.

Don't get me wrong. Don is awesome. I think I have 4 of Don's lights and he once sent me one _before_ I actually paid for it. I would trust Don with a pre pay in a minute.

I'm just saying I understand why Don wouldn't want to do pre-pay. AFAIK, he hasn't done one in a long time and I assume this is on purpose.

I completely understand that Don has chosen not to do pre-pay in the past, and his reasons are really beside the point--it's his business and he gets to make the rules, and his customers have been the beneficiaries of his policies.

The only reason that I bring up the subject of pre-pay again is because titanium does present a uniquely large financial risk to Don if he were to try to make enough lights to meet the demand and ended up overestimating sales. Pre-pay would elminate that risk while satisfying customers, but it is not a headache-free solution, nor did I intend to suggest that it is.

As long as the over-estimation does not leave Don with a huge number of lights lights, I do think that he will have no headacke to sell them in the end.

There will always be people that miss the run, people that join this forum and discover Don's lights... and people that would want to buy a second one once they receive their first light.

Those lights speak for themselves, I really think that selling those left is a matter of days/weeks. Not months.

I understand Don's position fully, but man, he is probably the one man that would not have to worry about seeling all his units. His stuff is genius, and you are right, people, like me, will want seconds and even thirds before their thirst is quenched.

Yep, don't misunderstand me, I fully understand Don's position too!

Knowing the price of a single flashlight, making a 50+ run of those is a huge investment, with it's risks and headacke that comes with.

This is not an easy position that Don puts himself in when he is doing this; once again, KUDO to Don. You're doing an incredible job.

Ok, Don. I think it's safe to say that another run of 50 would be a safe bet.

    Hi guys,
I just wanted to let you know that I have placed a PO for some Ti PD sets in a quantity that exceeds the expressed interest in this thread. By the light's very nature and price, it will be a limited production item but I am not going to disclose the actual number of these because I don't want that to be a deciding factor for anyone buying one nor do I want to limit the number of these that I might ultimately make. I have been messing around with some of the Ti lights here on Maui and I am real happy with how they are impervious to the salt air and water; not to mention that they have worked as they should. With the open architecture of the light engine, I think these sets will be timeless and adaptable to new generations of LED's and drivers so I am not concerned about their ultimate sell ability. These are still vapor but the vapor is taking shape and I have made a commitment to move forward. I believe in the light and love the material so what the heck! I tweaked the design in some small ways and it's kind of spooky commiting to such a large purchase without a first article but I am hoping that I might get a first article prior to the production run. These are based on the 20 mm reflector. I am looking into the possibility of a 27L mm reflector Ti PD as well but it is through a different vendor and at the aid of a fellow CPFer. No prices or quantities or firm details on any of these programs at present; no further comment.

    Hi guys,
There is no line and there is no group buy. The parts on order are for a Ti version of the original PD but with some minor tweaks as well as the Al heat sink as used in the McLux T.

That is a Ti head, bezel ring, sleeve and piston along with clip and clip screws.
