The problem is that many common bacteria and fungi have evolved into being resistant to the drugs that have kept them at bay for a half-century.

That excerpt is true. It's like how people tend to buy these anti-bacterial gels and wipes and soaps. They'll kill the germs alright—even the good ones! The bad ones sooner or later develop a "resistance" to it, but the good ones seem to not. . .

Antibiotics and antibacterials aren't the same. Antibiotics are drugs that you put into your own body. So they have to be carefully tuned to the differences between bacteria biology and human biology, so that they kill the bacteria cells but they don't kill your cells. Antibacterials (like soaps) are only used externally, so they can just kill everything they touch as long as they don't penetrate your skin too much and aren't too toxic. That's much harder for bacteria to defend against. If you injected Dial soap into your veins it would kill your own cells that it came in contact with, so use only as directed .
