I've been reading about delays in the launch of the PS3 with quotes of the manufacturing price being around £560 per unit. I'm wondering whether this is being shoved up by the blu-ray drive?
I've not seen a spec for blu-ray yet, but I'd imagine that a "cheap" DPSS laser wouldn't do the trick - you'd presumably need a fair bit of stability to avoid getting read errors.
So that would mean a directly-injected blue laser diode - do these even exist yet?
Either that, or Sony will have to squeeze a little Argon Ion tube into the form factor
