Well I've not been here that long. but when I did arrive after years of lurking I arrived at a neutered amorphous community, a place where everyone was accepted and welcomed. In the last few months I've seen too many antagonistic posts. I even got sucked in myself here , WHY? but there are loads of threads currently about dates, spelling, words, who really gives a %*@#, I don't!!!. We all know what we mean and, everyone else does too FFS shut up an get on with it

This might have been an accepting and welcoming community, but neutered? :faint: I dunno, I thought at least a few guys here had kids. :)

I don't see your post as antagonistic (unless you were really trying to be bitchy or whatever). We rib each other all the time, especially one's you've been around for a while and start to "make friends" with other CPF'ers. We do have the occassional :touche: but it's all good I think. I've seen those "mood swings" come and go since I've joined. I try to stick to the rules and be nice; it's all good.

My post was humor, not quibbling over semantics. I'm not sure I'd ever think the membership of this forum had been non-gender-specific in some way. Or if it was, how a change in that could be considered harmful. Assuming that offensive posts one way or the other aren't involved.

I'm new here, but I lurked for months. The only reason I started posting is because this is a nice group. Look around at a few other forums, CPF is great. There are others where pissing matches are the rule and actual information is hard to find. CPF is a blessing.

Antagonism
# Hostility that results in active resistance, opposition, or contentiousness. See Synonyms at enmity.
# The condition of being an opposing principle, force, or factor: the inherent antagonism of capitalism and socialism.

:huh2:

Sorry greenLED, I should of posted the thread rather than my reply. It just seems to me, that recently, there's been an American/English conflict. I don't like it. So tell me what you think about antagonistic threads?

I believe some people are critical of others so they can elevate themselves. This is most often unintentional and could even be a "normal" reaction to a low self esteem. Of course it can also just be a bad day and after kicking the dog you log onto cpf.

I think it's a good point you bring up and worthy of reflection for all of us regarding how we post. We are a very friendly community and can easily forget how much is lost in our communication by only reading words and smilies. Without the aid other communication like tone of voice and facial expression, it is easy to misinterpret someone elses comment. This suggest that we should all be a bit more generous in our judgements than we are in person. Actually, if everyone was a bit more generous in everything, the world would be a nicer place. :)

SolarFlare, if I may venture off-topic just a bit, could you tell me how you linked to your single post at the top of this thread?

Thanks,
Greg

In any society, there are tensions that must be displayed and dealt with. The alternative is to speak and think superficially. This little CPF society does a pretty good job of dealing with the tensions that naturally arise, mostly through self-policing.

The other day a fellow posted that he had been "excepted" by a graduate school. I wanted to throw up. I know it's minor that he confused excepted with accepted, but, for God's sake, he was going to graduate school. I wanted to post something about the decline of western civilization and the growth of anti-intellectualism in the Bush era - but I didn't. And now I have, in a more appropriate place. I hope (!)

The format for the URL was
Code:
[url =http: //www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showpost.php?p=1301435&postcount=14] here [/url]

That URL has P= thread and postcount = post number. That URL is pointed to by the post number in the upper right hand side of the box around each post. My browser lets me copy that link location and paste it into the message.

- Make sure your editing mode is set to WYSIWYG (goto User CP (top of CPF bar), and edit your options if not - WYSIWYG option is towards end of page.

- Each post has a little number on the top right side of it. Right click on it and copy the link location

- Compose your post. Enter some text that is relevant or indicative of the post you're linking to. For example: "click here for yada-yada-yada"

- Select "click here for yada-yada-yada", and on the top of the WYSIWYG editing window you'll see a little icon with a planet and a chain (two links of a chain, actually).

-Click on that link, a little window opens.

- Paste the post link you copied before and hit enter.

- "click here for yada-yada-yada" should now be underlined and shown in blue letters (or something like that) - you have a live link to one post

:)

Sturluson, feel free to browse the Café and post on my "Are we (Americans) getting stupid?" thread (or something like that)

I don't see ribbing people for how they say torch vs. flashlight can be antagonistic.

Amen!!!

I've also lurked a heckuavalot longer in the other forums, but logged in here earlier because of the member's attitude of respect. It's also the most "non-white" friendly forum.

(P.S. - I'm not here to start anything about my last statement. Just telling it the way I feel/see it.)

I just click the post number on the top right and then copy the address, that links to the single post.

Excellent reply BTW Nethiker, its that kind of levity that makes CPF such a superb forum. My point isn't about ribbing as greenLED said, I have a sense of humour, it just seems to me that recently there has been a proliferation of posts, in all threads, that question what people are saying or believing. Yeah I agree its mostly trivial banter about dates and spelling etc... but thats the thin end, its the intent that concerns me. Like I stated earlier in the thread CPF has always been non specific in terms of sex, race, religion or nationality. I prefer it that way where we are all just people discussing the things we share together. Semantics are irrelevant, Potato, potahto, Tomato, tomahto.
Let's call the whole thing off

But oh, if we call the whole thing off
Then we must part
And oh, if we ever part, then that might break my heart
