CMG Reactor Resurrection

I've got a 2 cell CMG reactor that I'd like to convert to rechargeable batteries. NiMH are too low voltage and give a weak greenish beam. Seems like I can stick in a 14650 Lion with a spacer. Do I need a resistor as well?
