New CR2 / CR123 Bodies for Fenix L2P

Warning : Although there are a few 'brave souls' running a L1P head on
3V lithiums, and in some cases 3.7V RCRs, the only setup recommended
with these battery tubes is a L2P head and 3V primary lithium battery.
Please use at your own risk.

After nearly 2 months of kicking around ideas with fellow CPFer 4sevens,
designing, negotiating and waiting for them to be machined, I am confident
enough to announce a new version of the Fenix CR2 bodies, as well as a
completely new CR123 body.

The following images were taken today at the machinist's factory.
Note that only 1 end of each body is finished and they have not been annodized yet.

CR2 body: This is a refined version of the Original CR2 body.
New features are...
- 3 slots for 1.5 x 5mm tritium vials (vials not included).
- Flush design with the body and head.
- Knurling

CR123 body: Perfect for those who have wanted a small CR123 clikie.
- Approximately 7.35mm longer than the CR2 body. Outer diamteter is the same.
- No tritium slots (walls are not thick enough).
- New size O-rings are being sourced to accomodate the fatter body of the CR123.
The O-rings will be thin so a sufficient amount of lube is recommended.

- Due to the small tolereances of the tube and variation of circumference between
different brands, some CR123 batteries may not be compatible.
I have tested the bare aluminum sample (taking the anno into account) using
Surefire, Battery Station, Sanyo and Duracell brands without issues.

Availability:
- First half of April 2006. Anything can still go wrong but I will do my best to meet this
deadline and keep you updated on any progress.

- Please order from 4sevens' webshop fenix-store.com. CR2 listed at 19$, CR123 at 18$.

The job of shipping and handling has become too much for me and I will not be
selling directly.

- To the flashaholics in Japan: The product will be offered through Pro Light Japan.
PLJ does not ship internationally so PLEASE do not make enquiries and add to their
workload.
日本の皆様へ:国内ではPro Light Japanを通じて販売を予定しております。

Thank you :)

These will ship to 4sevens tomorrow. Thanks again for your patience :)

EDIT September 30 2006
Since there seems to be continued interest in these, there is another run of CR123 bodies being made.
I am not guranteeing anything until I have the items in my hands and have tested them to work as designed.

Availability: Early to mid November (if all goes well) through member 4sevens (Fenix-store.com ) only.
今回の販売は上記ウェブショップからのみとなります。

The new type is designed to work with both the L2P and L*T series of lights.
When used with the L2P, the gap between the head and knurling will be 1mm wider than when put on a L*T.
They will be the same inner diameter (16.70mm) and will NOT fit any Protected Rechargable CR123
batteries available at the moment.
Sorry about this as I know some of you are very keen on using them. Some unprotected rechargables have
been reported to fit.

I will try to visit the machinist before they are anodised and hope to post pics and updates here, or
maybe in a new thread. Questions are welcome but until then, there is nothing more I can inform you of.

Thanks for you patience :)

END of EDIT September 30 2006

EDIT October 28 2006
The CR123 bodies have reached 4sevens and are on sale now.
Thank you very much for your patience.
A simple project turned into something pretty big. I've enjoyed it immensely, but this will
most likely be my last Fenix mod to offer. Thanks again :)
EDIT END

Thanks for the replies :)

While waiting for the bodies to be machined, new lights in the same category were being introduced and I was a bit worried there would not be much interest.
Your enthusiasm is truly truly appreciated.

The distribution will be done by 4sevens, I hope he wakes up soon!

I will not be selling anything directly now, not enough time.

If there is a strong interest in bare Al bodies, we may be able to make more available since the annodizing is still a few days away.

Do you have the overall length of the cr2 and 123 with head and tail installed?
Some reading ,it looks like the old cr2 bodies are 2.5 inch, how long will the 123 be?

Thanks.

I don't have the lights with me now, but the length of the CR2 will be the same as the old one.
The 123 will be 7.35mm longer.

Can anyone measure thiers? The old ones were around 2.5 inch, so adding 7.35 mm makes it 2 3/4 approx? Definitly under 3 inches if the original data is accurate. If so , I will chose a cr123 , it should have a longer battery life. Any projections on runtime with 123? Cr2 was approx 1 hour, as reported in old thread. So now a decision , a 123 non rechargeable short body, or a new P1 that will use rechargable and is a 3 watt led. Now if only one of them had a hi/low option.:) Will the 123 modified short body be brighter than a p1? So many cool lights. Sorry for the ramble, Im sure Im not the only one thinking this.:)

nekomane,

Have you tried using protected R123a? I'll be using rechargeable exclusively.

Thanks

No, don't have any rechargables. I have read somewhere that AW's rechargables are 'fatter' than standard primaries.
As stated in the first post, the CR123 tube has little tolerance.
Also, I cannot recommend using 3.7v unless you have a modded circuit.

I wonder if the 3.0V R123As from MarkCM would work since they have an internal circuit to limit the voltage to <3.2V. What's the max the L2P driver can take?
If the Jet1 wasn't available, I'd have one of these for sure, especially since the L2Ps dropped in price and I like the look of the L1P/L2P heads/designs more than the new P1. A clickie is a nice feature. Too bad it's not a Lux3.

jsr,

I intend to use Mark's 3.0V cells if I get the CR123a body. So far I've used his 3.0V cells in all my lights with no problem. If fact, this tube might take business away from the up coming Fenix P1.

I made an aluminum foil body :grin2: for my L1P and ran a CR123 in it with no ill effects and a moderate increase in brightness. I've also run the L1P head on an L2P body with a drastically increased output. Perhaps the lithium primary cell cant supply enough current to get you into trouble?

So, any chance you'll make a single AA body, so that if we buy an L2P, we'll have access to all the body types without having to buy an L1P too?
