Direct Drive with Peak CPF Special?

My question is thus:

I have a Peak CPF Special. One thing I have noticed is that I can still get light out of it with a battery whose open-circuit voltage is well below the forward voltage of the LED.

A really dead 2.5 volt CR123A battery will make absurdly dim, but still white, as far as I can tell, light.

Am I misunderstanding what direct drive means? Is it not just a battery directly powering an LED, the way it works with most incandescents?

If that is what it means, how can my 2.5 volt CR123A make white light if it is below the Vf of the LED?
:huh2:
