I'm going back to my country(asia) in a few weeks and I need to buy 10 led flashlights for gifts. I can't afford more than $20 for each flashlight. I need a flashlights that will give the longest running time on either AA,C or D batteries. I'm thinking of getting this

but i'm worry it might not be bright enough. I'm also considering getting cheap flashlights and change the bulb to this

What do you think is the best choice? please feel free to give me suggestions. Thanks

Hi there,

For the LONGEST running flashlight, the best designs all use large D alkaline cells. Check out the Lightwave Pro4000 light, it runs for NINE HUNDRED HOURS AT FULL OUTPUT on three D cells. Pretty humbling for the rest of my 123 lithium lights. At BrightGuy.com.

Hello mp3er3000:)

I own a Lucido PA light since 6 years. It's the first generation.
It eats a 9V Block battery but his hunger is like some reptile:grin2:.
I change the battery only 1 time a year and need the light every night for going to bed and sometimes to go in the bathroom at night.
The manufacturer tells, the battery lives 2 years at standby, 250 hours on economy mode and 50 hours full power.
I believe this. It's a nice little light, cheap and mine was also a gift.

Perhaps this will be an idea for you.

Best regards

...If your weren't asking this - I would have asked you what flashlights you might be able to find back home..... :)

For under $19 and a bit of work you could convert some Mini MagLite 2AA to run with sMJLEDs.

Base cost of MiniMag less than $9 from WalMart or Target.

sMJLED Kit - so this is just a drop-in exercise - $10.

Or if you're willing drill/ream out the standard reflector - the sMJLED are $5.50 for the first and $5 each additional........

So the total price could be as low as $14 each.....

Reported runtimes are over 30 hours even on plain alkalines -
and the sMJLEDs do run well on alkalines.
(actually even when the alkalines become too weak with the sMJLED - there is actually still a lot of juice left - enough to light up a Nite Ize drop in module for 5-10 hours.....)

Super MJLED at Lambda

I think you should get Gerber Infinity Ultras for about $15 each. They're not the LONGEST running, but they're solid and they run on one AA cell, the most common battery in the world, for long enough that a normal user won't use up the cell within its shelf life. Runtime is maybe 12 hours on one AA. You might be able to open it up and change a resistor to double the runtime (and halve the brightness).

See liok below for my impressions a while ago. It is also fairly heavy (stainless steel) in the package (+4 diehard batteries). The pushbutton is very stiff - not suitable for young children or old folks with weak fingers. Not much throw but reasonably bright at closer distances (5-15 feet) in 4 or 5 led mode.

PR2-W1-WVR LED FlashLight bulb is 1/2 the price of the lambda PR. 10mm 0.5W LED produces a floody beam. (The Lambda is more focussed). Works reasonably well in 2AA flashlights with small reflectors. (I have them in Dorcy Rubber Illuminators 41-2950 and Gelbrites 41-2961). Does not focus properly in big reflectors. (3D or 4AA)
