Well, I heard on the radio that the biggest change that most people can make to reduce energy use is to wash their clothes in cold water. That's what I do now. I can't say that I follow my energy use so closely that I can tell the difference but I believe that it does make a big difference and my clothes come out just as clean.

No I just use Tide. I admit I'm pretty ignorant about laundry soap but Tide works for me. I think it's mostly marketing hype anyway. I don't think there's all that much difference between brands.

The website looks legit and seems to have some good advice.

One way we saved on our waterheating expense was by wrapping the water heater with an insulating blanket. A good low volume shower head is also a saver.

A 45 second shower sounds extreme to me. There are some small pleasures in life worth paying for, and a good hot shower is one in my book.

Good luck on cutting your heating bill, and it's good to see you round here again raggie.

Raggie,

As I have said before, there must be something strange going on in your home if you have $75 gas bills when you are not heating your home, taking very short showers, not using the drier, washing in (mostly) cold water, etc...

I have two adults and 2 young girls. Believe me--it is hard to get them to take anything less then a 20 minute shower (low flow shower head) 5 times a week (they are in swim classes), using a gas drier (too wet and cold lately to do much line drying), plus I do run the furnace maybe 30 minutes a day. All that gave me my highest gas bill of around $70 a couple of months ago.

Ask your power company about an appliance check and/or energy audit... At least one of those is probably a free service. And, you can ask the person when they come out about your power bills.

doh, this is turning into quite a comedy. I meant to say wrap it in "code" and "/code" inside brackets. You can also do it by selecting the text and clicking on the # icon.

But you need to do that with the original text that still has the carriage returns.

Hope that works.

Looking at the data, around 150 CCF per month is your hot water, dishes, showers, and cooking... Above 200 CCF per month appears to be heating and those long winter hot showers???

-Bill

PS: If those are CCF (hundreds of cubic feet of gas and are basically equal to 10.25 therms--my billing units)--those are some scary bills. My natural gas ranges between $0.95 to $1.65 per therm (the $1.40 to $1.65 per therm are prices in the last 6 months). -BB

I have had my washers hot water tap turned off for more than 10 years. Use any soap. They are mostly the same. Clothes are washed nice and clean.

I think that if you adjust the water heater to just about warm in the summer and adjust it in winter you can save a few bucks, also if you are the only resident in your home setting the heater in only the autopilot flame may be enough to give you 2 warm showers each day and save some more.
