Can I just get a bolt, put some nuts and washers on it and wrap in E tape?

Thanks
Will aluminium work?

copper would be best maybe a 1/4" rod cut to the same length as the battery then pad (tape or foam) it to the same diameter as the cell you're copying. for C' or D's i use 1" copper piping and end caps from home depot (plumbing) then solder it all together. Solder isnt necessary, but i like to do it.

then wrap the outside (non contact areas) with electrical tape or shrink tubing.

Probably lots of ways to do it but what you describe is reasonable if you do it carefully, get the dimensions right, and make sure the sides are insulated.

I built a AA dummy by drilling a hole along the axis of a piece of 1/2" diameter wooden dowel and inserting a bolt. The head end of the bolt was filed flat.
