Mag85/ROP/other "small" high output light runtime question

Hi all,

I'm trying to pick a small (4D or smaller) high power light. I'm looking for at least 1000 lumens output and 45minute runtime or longer. Is there a ROP or MAG85/74/? setup that meets this set of requirements? Thanks!

Hmm...sounds like the AE 24w HID Powerlight. It's about the size of a Mag 4D, has a runtime of around 2 hours and puts out around 1300 lumens.
If you have never seen an HID light in action, prepare to be quite amazed...

Mhm does sound like you're looking for a HID light. The M@g85 and ROP are considered the two brightest hotwires for 35watts and under...a top shelf M@g85 will give around 850 lumens output for 30-40 minutes depending on cells used. A top shelf ROP should be around 800 output lumens and go for just a little under a hour (4D subC model).

Seems like you need something more than AA's. Maybe 1/2D's if you can get enough of them into a 4D body.

I built my Mag85 using 8AA's and a 2D body. With a 4D body you could get 16 AA's in there. Either wired in parallel/series or with a voltage regulator, maybe you could get the right voltage and more runtime.

Yeah, if you really have such high standards of output and runtime, limiting to a Mag body is probably not a good idea.

Another vote for AE Powerlight.

But Pbs357 is looking for at least 1000 output lumens...none of the fairly long runtime popular hotwires in 2D-4D will do that :(

Well he didn't define his output requirements as "torch" lumens...and I would not infer that was what he meant, since technically speaking 1300 "bulb" output lumens is still "output."

"Bulb Lumens" are by far the more common way that people talk about which Maglite/ROP bulb type and mod they are using.

If he does mean "torch" lumens exceeding 1,000 L then yeah it will have to be a HID spotlight.

I see others are addressing the lumens questions. Torch lumen or bulb lumen. Because as long as we stay relative, look at the WA1164 on 9.6 volts or the Phillips 5761 on 7.2 volts because both in typical configurations have higher lumen outputs than WA1185 solutions. Torch lumens compare respectively 1185 @ 800 L, 5761 @ 896 L, and 1164 @1015 L. The calculations are from the WA equations imbedded into the HotRater calculating spread sheet published by AWR. You can build a 2D 1164 or a 2c-cell 5761. The 1185 was out there first and hence its proven popularity and is very efficient for output, since its origins other solutions have been developed.
There are great threads on all of these, use the search feature and search key words: 5761 and 1164 and lookout, the returns are great for 1185, m85, etc. Have fun, so many choices, so little time.
