The strange thing about this is even nowdays most of us
still flash our Flashlights that way

I've always thought that they were called flashlights is for signaling uses, take a navigator's kerosene lamp, put blinds on it, and by toggling the blinds, works like morse code, originally for the military, but thats undocumented...
