The E series was host to all kinds of LED mods in years gone by..........................

I really like that second one from the bottom. I'll bet a six 5mm LED mod using new uber-bright, high efficiency white LED's (not Nichias, but something without angry blue and even more efficient) for the E series lights would sell like hotcakes. :)

The first one looks like some of those LED's that are used in autos. Those ones that are sort of in between a 5mm and a Lux. Are they 8mm?

IIRC that was the famous Opalec Newbeam-in-E-series mod.. the big LEDs are 5mm, the small one is a 3.

Don, is that bottom one a 3W? I would LOVE to get one for an E2e. Are they still made? If there was a 65+ lumen LED assembly for the E2e, I'd be all over it.

I'd REALLY like to see a reflectored LED for the E1e. I wonder if the Terralux Ministar2 TLE-5 could go in there?

i think those were the prototypes that Don was playing with
if you check out his website
http://dmcleish.com/CPF/
you will see many evolutions of the e series and many different evaluation of possible light engines
btw, prepare yourself for serious flashlight porn

If McGizmo doesn't make you one contact Chop. I'm pretty sure Chop still does this mod.

Don you show off! (can I have one of each? )

I do wonder why terralux or someone has not made a LUX drop in for the E1e/E2e series. the hole look's like it would fit. (I think) since this seem's to be the most popular SF's around, and aside from us that have KL-1's/KL-4's alreadymay not need them, but those that want this option would find a drop in a cheap easy way to go "LED" on there incan E light's. I'm quite satisfied with the KL1, more durable than a mod and warranteed. My sample is bright on the same cells that barely glows a P60!

The KL4 head has been used for mods many times. A '5-Watt' mod downgraded to a '3-Watt' mod sounds like going a mod going backwards. The reverse is true; a Lux III works very well in a KL4 head.

Luxeon III and Luxeon V are the real names. Marketing people have convinced the world the emitters are 1, 3 & 5 watt to sell more lights. Check out the LumiLEDs website; the emitters are really Luxeon I, III, V and K2. A KL4 head downgraded to a Lux III works great. The smaller Lux III emitter throws a decent beam. The spot beam is more defined and concentrated. The KL4 reflector is a great match for a Lux III emitter. You can see in the picture that I've got many variations of KL4 heads which include Lux I, III, V and K2 emitters.

DOn did a mod like this called the McL4 a long while back ... it was a KL4 with a R2H LuxI at 600mA. Just like TB said ... a very satisfying beam in a great and tough head.
The only problem with this is price ... 'cause you need the not-too-cheap KL4 AND have it modded.

Nostalgic post?

There is only one thing that comes to my mind...

If I remember right, the Nichia-LED-drop in for the E2 was one of the very first mod´s in CPF´s history... LED Museum on E2 & LED-drop in :naughty:
