I am in need of a good LED nightlite. I was hoping the knowledge base here could help me faster than I could search on my own. I need one that is bright enough to light up a 10x10 room, but soft enough not to wake a newborn. Preferably one that will plug into a standard AC outlet. If there is one readily available to buy, or a mod that is not very time consuming please tell me about it. Thanks in advance.

Most LED nitrlites do the ceiling bounce thing with 1 LED and fail to light up a room enough so I don't trip over the furniture. Unfortinately the few thatsends out light sideways might wake up baby. The LEDs don't last too long. noticable drop in output 6 months to 2 years depending onthe quality of the lite.

Got mine at Walmart Canada, not Glowbug. Using it in my bathroom.

This one got louvres so light output can be adjusted somewhat.

I do not like the cool white of the LED nitelites. I have a 1 watt warm white bulb in an uplite in my bedroom. Too bright for baby I think. I might try their warm white 3 LED bulb in an incan. nitelite fixture. Have not got 1 yet due to EliteLED's $8 international shipping surcharge.

A couple of non-AC options to consider are the Zzz...Lite from EternaLight: http://www.techass.com/el/zlite/zlite.php

and the Derringer, which uses 3 AAA cells: http://www.techass.com/el/derngr/index.php

For minimal operating cost, the Derringer sports 3 brightness levels for the 2 white LEDs and 2 levels for the single red LED. Red LEDs are said to be good for use around people that are sleeping since the light is not easily detected. Not sure why; perhaps it's connected to absorption of the light by the closed eyelids. Rechargeable cells would make the operating cost quite low. The light can be either used for room lighting or for pointing to an area of interest. Putting it on a lanyard around your neck while moving around would be useful too.

I just bought one that was way too bright. I opened it up and ended up putting 5-6 layers of blue gel over the LEDs before I could stand it.

LOL! I bought 2, and they are indeed very bright! Supposedly draw 0.25w.

I took a plastic white yogurt cup, peeled the labl off, and set it on top of the light.
It diffuses the light nicely, like a lampshade...but, it is still darn bright. I wonder if the LED is being driven hard?

The Energizer folding led is near perfect:

Uses 4 AA cells, runs 200 hrs on low, puts out an absolutely even light, NO hot spot at all, anywhere. I use it as ceiling bounce and it evenly lights up a room dimly. I check the kids every night with it. $6.99 at Target. It has been discussed extensively on this forum. Form factor (about like a small thick wallet) makes it easy to set anywhere.

I went to Lowes in North Carolina and got a bunch of the clam shell LED night lights for my beach place. They worked out so well, I just went out here in Houston and got a couple more for our house here, and another type of LED nightlight as well. From what I've seen, Lowes has had the best selection I've seen of LED nightlights.

What are those Sylvania tap lights called? The round ones with 3 LEDs... that might work as well - I think they're available at Target, assuming you're in the US.

What I did for nightlights was get some cheap tap lights from walmart (2USD for 4) that run off 4 AA. I just opened them up, put some cheap 5mm leds and resistors in there. They run quite awhile and I use up my dead batteries this way.

As someone above suggested, if you don't light the cold white of leds at night, you can also buy the warmer color tints. I think the 5mm ones look cool--very traditional color tint in a modern efficient package.

Check at your local hardware store, Home Depot, Lowes, Costco, Sams, Target, Wal*Mart, K-Mart/Sears, or local drug store. LED night lights are available just about everywhere these days. How well they light up a 10X10 room depends upon your expectations though. For me, they were more than adequate, given their intent is not to keep the room lit, only to provide adequate light in darkness.

A couple of years ago, I bought a 5-6 pack at Costco, but I haven't seen them there since (not unusual). These had light sensors on them to activate when there wasn't adequate ambient light.
