Quick question. Do I connect the anode on the LED to the pos or neg terminal of the battery?

Figured it out. Anode goes to the + terminal on the batt.

Ken, thanks for anvil=neg visual approach.

The anode (the smaller of the two metal parts inside the LED case) is connected to the (+) positive. The cathode is the part that looks like an anvil or a tiny cup; this goes on the (-) negative.

In some types of red LEDs, the anode is actually the big part (the one that looks like an anvil) but this is a very rare exception to the rule.
