I remember a kid in my class bringing something like a photophone to 'show and tell' back in the 50s. It was very easy to use and it worked very well. I can remember standing in a second floor window and talking to him through the glass, down in the playground.

Ramsey Electronics has had this inexpensive Light Beam Communicator Kit on sale for quite a while. I love the Ramsey kits.

I have a light beam communicator kit sitting in a junk drawer somewhere. It worked ok and it was never meant for long distance communications. It was more or less to demonstrate the principle involved.

I'm betting that this new attachment mentioned in the article is using souped up IR or UV LEDs and encryption.
