Unprotected Rechargeable Li-Ion 3.7v question?

What is the advantages of using protected Rechargeable Li-Ion 3.7v?
and What is the possible dangers of using Unprotected Rechargeable Li-Ion 37?
i'll be using it on my L5, and What is the difference between Unprotected & Protected? and how to know

Protected:They shut off when they get low, so you dont ruin the battery. The only downside, they leave you in the dark

Unprotected: No shut off circut. They will drain down till they wouldnt take a charge anymore. They dont leave you in the dark, but you have to know when to change them, or you will destroy them.
