Making an ordinary radio to a scanner.

Scanners are cheap these days. If you want one, just go and buy one. Most radios (including scanners) these days are made on disposable circuit boards with much of the components integrated, that are not meant for modification nor are they feasible to repair. When they break, throw them away and get another one.

If you want to make a scanner--I had many hours of fun with a home made crystal set.

Basically, they picked up the strong local radio transmissions. And because a simple crystal set is not very selective, you can quickly zoom around the "dial" and find them quickly. If you hear anything interesting, you can usually look up the frequency (40+ years later, thanks to the Internet) and tune a standard receiver to that frequency.
