has anybody been inside the "PR SMJLED".

is it possible to get inside without destroying it.

is it potted.

how well is it heatsinked.

what componets are used in the step-up.

someone must have a blow-one they can dissect, and take some photos.

thanks.

I was feeling destructive and did for one.
I was going to stick the parts into a mag aaa.
The LED has gone into a Gerber Infinity Ultra (floody, no spot)

If I remember rightly.

The aluminium collar has white gunk in it which I took to be thermal paste of some kind.
The LED is on long stalky leads going up through the collar.
The components are on a small 8mm diam board and are not potted.
The inductor has two windings I'd guess on a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio. Similar to some simple transistor boost circuits I've built.

I sliced the SMJLED leads off at the base of the alu collar then dissected it.
You have to lever the alu collar up and then slice through. Or was it dig out the button and work from the bottom up.
It still worked when I connected it back up. The metal tabs at the side make the contact for the other battery connection. There is a wire soldered into the solder button at the base of the flanged bit.

I potted the circuit in epoxy to avoid damaging it!! Meaning everything is gunked up now.

You don't kill it when you dismantle it but be very careful.
There are some realy fine wires in there which will snap easily.

I can't macro at the moment but will have a look at it if no one esle does.

Now I've done it I wish I hadn't.

Cheers.

thanks for the writeup leduk.

I thought somebody would have had one open by now with the amount they must have sold.

I would liked to have seen a closeup of the circuit board.

does it look like the led`s heat is conducted to the body, by the aluminium collar.

regards.

Yes. That's what the white gunk was about I think. The base of the LED is in contact with the alu collar and under the base is the white gunk.

On an un-opened PR2 you can see the white stuff.
Get a magnifying glass or squint and you should see the white mess round the led and through the clear LED body. I think this looks like good old fashioned white thermal grease that you'd squidge under a CPU.

I didn't mind sacrificing one since I have a lot of them. You will see electronics under the tail of the bulb.
