I emailed terralux and this is what they said
"A slight over voltage will not damage the D3W, however it has to be used
in a maglite. If you were to take the unit out and provide it with 4.8v
then the unit would overheat. We have designed the D3W to work with the
Mag and special heat dissipation, if you use the D3W in a different unit
then it would void the warranty.

If you have anay problems running it at 4.8v, please dont hesitate to
contact me."
This seems reasonable as most electric and electronic devices specify a range of 100-120v for input current, it would only seem resonable that a volage within +/-10% would be ok, as the batteries them selves are often no more reliable than that.

find someway to add a heatsink to it and you're golden. i bought one long ago, but was very disappointed with its output. my quad U-bin lux owns. I'll never buy drop ins again.

they should be kill for lying...

chesterqw.....terralux wasn't lying, you simple misread their message. They never said that the Mag has an aluminum interior. The "special heat dissipation" they referred to is the black outer shell of the Diamond unit which screws into the Mag lamp socket. They further warned not to remove this piece in order to use the Diamond in any other flashlight.
