Hey Guys,

I recently got a Nuwai Q3 to tinker around with.

After removing the Bezel and the plastic inner ring,
I was able to access the Lumiled star.

.
I unsoldered the + and - connections and removed the star.
I'm looking to make this light SUPER Brighter:grin2:

Is there anywhere I can just get a 19.55 replacement star
with a much brighter led ???

I did a search on FluPICS, but the ones I found did not include
the led.

Please forgive my newbness...any help would be appreciated.

I'm just proud of how I was able to remove everything without destroying
the Q3:rock:

Thanks!

Ray

PS- to any owner of the Q3. I removed the bezel, is there an easy way
to remove the reflector?? It appears to have glue on the inside.
Does it need to be unscrewed?? I dont want to force anything.

Can't answer your question about the reflector, yet. I have a Q3 on the way right now. But you certainly can get a new star from any number of people here on CPF.

Photonfanatic sells them. I have bought several from him and never had any problems. Look here.

Good luck!

I would buy one, but I really don't understand what the

UXOJ, UX1J, UXOK differences mean.

I want something brighter, but can I even begin to grasp
how these different lettered stars run off of 1 cr123 battery.
Can these stars be used with a RC123?? Which ones brighter??
Which one will give me a better battery life??

Man, my head is starting to hurt:lolsign:

Thanks for the link. At least I know where to buy them from now.

Well we need to know what you have now? You may not see much of a difference in brightness by just changing the star. Depending on the bin you may get a better tint however.

For brighter it may be necessary to change the driver board to pull more out of the battery and push the led harder.

Ok, I'm starting to understand the lettering a bit.

On the back of the Q3 star that I removed are 2 rows of numbers.
The top row is: SX1KW0035917

I take it the first 4 letters are the BIN number??
Photon sells the (LUX III Star) SX1K for 10.00.
His (LUX III Star) UXOJ sells 18.00.

I take it this is a brighter LED??
Even though they are both "Lux III Stars" is there
that much of a difference between them??

Thanks Mirage!

For an explaination of bin coding go here.

The first letter of the bin is the flux rating or range of lumen output.

The second two letters tell you the tint.

The last letter tells the fv or required voltage.

Kid9P your reflector can be unscrewed. Use a needle nose plier and fit them into the two holes behind the reflector and start turning anti-clockwise. It should come out after a very very short while. :D

No problem. Glad to help.

BTW XO and WO are generally regarded as the most nuetral or white tints and therefore the most sought after. Hence their higher prices.

That reflector is on TIGHT.

I even reheated it up with a blow dryer,
I'm just starting to scrape up the 2 holes at this
point, so I think I'll give up on that part of it:awman:

A two stage clickie... I haven't read up much on the Q3 but it sounds to me like you should do the same thing as with the Fenix two-stage mod, since it's a reverse clickie.

Err, I'd have fetched some links by now, but the search function is giving me a blank page... You just need to pick up a pack of resistors from RadioShack... the little ones.

ok.... you get a U-bin lux III and then a NEW better heatsink for the Q-3.

that should get you far enough... unless you want a new driver too :p

If you are game for one more try, put the bezel in a plastic bag and immerse the entire bag in boiling water. leave it for 10 min and then try unscrewing it again.

My Q1 was opened up this way. However, it did not have loctite applied on the reflector so maybe i was just lucky?

After you get the U binned emitter, fire it up with an R123 to send it into overdrive! I've given a Q3 to a friend with a TWOJ and R123. He's been using it about 1/2 hr everyday for over a year without problems. :)

I just found this how to mod a Q3 thread for newbie. Thanks Kid9P.
Are you gonna use a flupic for it?

I m trying to do up my QIII as well. My plan is a Q3 + UCL + UWOJ + flupic + recessed tailcap :)

Warren AKA litemania had almost made the perfect Q3 in HA

Hi,

I'm going to pass on the flupic on this mod for now.
I did replace the stock star with a UXOJ, which is much
brighter. I also replaced the reflector with a smooth one,
so it also has a better throw.

I just received the 2 stage switch. I will replace the stock
one this weekend. Since this light is now MUCH brighter, it would
be nice to have a high/low option.

I still haven't decided where to get the mineral crystal from.
I haven't found any sites that have a perfect size 22.mm
I would have to probably get a 22.5 and PATIENTLY sand it down
to fit.

I'll post a picture of the complete light, probably next week.

Thanks for everyones help in making my FIRST MOD a success:grin2:

Nice mod maybe I might consider just a 2 stage instead of a flupic as well.
You could go over to a nearest watch store and get the mineral glass lens.

I ll be keeping the stock Q3 reflector on mine cause its my favorite beam profile. ;)

Really waiting for MAX pimped Q3 in HA3
