Since going to a cable provider, it's been nice but I wonder what speed I'm actually getting. When I watch the status bar of a file DL, I see it usually is around 46-58Kbps and when I time a 4 meg file is about 1:30 seconds. My connection is supposed to be 6 Mbps down...

When I do these tests:

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

The restults vary depending time of day...ironically after 12 am, the results are often slower than mid-day. But then the peak from 4-10 PM is slower. Speakeasy always has higher results. By my rough calculations the average speed I see is around 1Mbps.

Any good test sites you suggest?

We used to have cable, and I was really pleased with it (Except upload). We just switched to FiOS and its pretty awesome, here are my results:

Speak Easy
2784 Down
948 up

CNET
1582.6 Down

Bandwidth Place
2.3 Megabits down

Now this is not hardwired to the modem, its over 802.11b. I imagine our main PC is much faster.

You can do some registry tweaks to improve speeds. Mainly, the RWIN value in the Window's registry. Since, tweaking I get 8741 down and 948 up with cable.

Go here for a weath of information and tweaks that do work:
