Longer runtime with Q3 help.

My friend has a Q3 that he runs with an R123 (Batterystations). He gets about 20 of bistering bright light but then it shuts off. He loves his Q3 and doesn't want to get another light that may suit his purpose. The Q3 must be modded.

Is there a 2-stage mod I can use to make a low that lasts about an hour?

I don't want to go with the FluPIC or other complex setups since my friend likes to keep things simple.

Any suggestions? TIA

My Q3 got 44 minutes with a TYOK, and 45 with the stock SX1J using Batterystation 750mAh R123s before the protection kicked in. A Surefire KL4 gets more runtime off them than your buddy is getting with his Q3.
Maybe this is a battery problem...

Silly. Not all tanktops are wife beaters.

White tanktop = wife beater, Black tanktop = dog beater :scowl:

Of course, I would never strike my dog. Not good to **** off a 191 lb dog.

...my teenage son on the other hand... :)

so, when running a q3 on a r123, it immediately shuts off?? I just gave my bro a few r123s for his q3 for camping.... he might be in the middle of the woods and...... no light. Anyone have a runtime chart?

It does if you are using ones that protect themselves. Apparently, the batterystation ones shut off.

Well. I added 4 x 15ohm SMD resistors in parallel for 3.75ohms and runtime went from 20min to shutoff to 83min to shutoff and light output was metered at 1/3 output.

Soldered it to a 2-stage switch and it went smoothly.

Perfect for my friend!

Ran the test in high and got 37 min. The 20min is what someone else was quoting to me.

Little over double runtime with the resistors. Good enough.
