text from the link.

"First it was a challenge to make LEDs that created truly white light instead of that yellowish or bluish glow, but that problem has long been solved."

I dont think so.:ohgeez:

I could see this happening due to the sky high fuel cost. THis about a Vegas casino and how much $$$ could be saved with a switch

I couldn't find the test parameters for this, though - high-power leds get a lot less efficient as you push more power through them.

The Nichia they reference, that topped 100 lumens/watt, was a 5mm type at 20 mA, I believe. Now, 12 lumens or so from a single 5mm led is impressive, but it doesn't scale up so well.

I'm waiting for a real 1 to 1.5 watt, 100 lumen led. 2 years away, maybe?

I wonder what power level the LED was run at to get this efficiency? The article doesn't say.

I'll guess that it was not anywhere near 1 watt giving 131 lumens, but I would be happy to learn otherwise.

I'm sorry but I can't see any product:anyone:.

Perhaps due to my bad english but for me it hears like marketing.

My favourite at the moment is Lumileds with it's LuxIII U-bin:grin2:

Are these powerled chips or 5mm? If it's 5mm, then that's still cool, if they are pure white and not blue/yellow typical 5mm nichia. I'd take one in an arcAAA for 12lumens please! wow!

Great! Lets see a 3W LED drop in and 5W heads for Surefires' now based on them!

lol…you wished for it. The single-die drop-in emitter on the left has the Cree emitter. The one on the right is the multi-die PR SMJLED drop-in. Both have electronics in them to run on two batteries. They are not 131 watts but the Cree drop-in bulbs do exist.

It is hard to tell. I'd say about the same with differences. The beam is whiter from the Cree emitter. And since the emitter is a single die rather then the older multi-die emitter the beam has a more intense spot beam so it will have a longer spot. The spill beam has about the same intensity.

The press release says "at 20mA." Will it scale to a 1A junction? But for showerheads it does portend a bright future for high efficiency area lighting! :D

I seriously doubt the scale up would work right. And the power is limited. Too much heat inside the bulb and it can't release fast enough. I'm skeptical of the Cree 131 lumen claim.

why think small?

imagine 50 cluster 20mA chips Yeah Big, but not all applications are Flashlights...

I imagine this as a area light...

More Surface Area, Less Heat generated / sq mm ... it's serious Contender to knock CFL Down. (if done right)

If arranged in a "Type 2" or "Type 3" (refering to solid state beam control) ...such an emitter at (3.8V x 1A = 3.8 Watts)...should deliver around 500 (3.8 * 131 = 497.8 Lumens) .. a most efficient 18 W CFL has around 2000 Lumens AT MAX typically it's around 1500 Lumens.... and with the cree cluster, it should take around 11 watts to deliver 1500 Lumens through the Cree Cluster.... yes less wattage difference but still its a whole lot of difference... (imagine dimmability... control.... etc)... i am thinking BIG here...

Stuff one of those in a Proton along with two 3mm red LEDs. :) Maybe the original (Nichia Jupiter) designed Proton can be realized with a Cree LED. Now to wait and see what happens with Cree and to see some really efficient LEDs to roll out on the production line.

These should be nice mod for the Surefire A2. Will they fit to replace the stock leds?

Are these already available? If so, where?

Thanks.
