http://planecrashinfo.com/w080917.htm did not know this. i live in ohio. when there were only two cars in the state, the owners and cars got together for a news story. they ran into each other accidently and it was the first auto wreck in ohio. made the news alright.

Selfridge is an Air National Guard base north of Detroit named for Thomas E. Selfridge back in 1917.
I used to hear sonic booms quite often as a kid when the aircraft from that base would play out over Lake St. Claire.

The only 2 cars in the state and they managed to run into each other Course, most retellings of it leave out the fact that they were getting together as you said...
As far as the plane crash, probably weren't ready to carry much in the way of passengers yet, Dont have to fall from all that high up to kill you evidently. Those things didn't go very high, nor very fast.
