Reverse SMT Power LED?

Here's the idea:

Instead of putting the power pins on the bottom or sides on the LED, why not put it on the top.

The Bottom of the LED sits on a heavy duty heatsink, with a good thermal interface.

The PCB is covering part of the LED body that does NOT emit light.

OR think of if this way: The LED pokes thru the PCB and the rest of the body sits below it.

CRAZY high density arrays of LEDs could be built this way, as the wiring no longer interferes with the heatsink. You could just use an big unmachined aluminium plate glued to the back of the LEDs.
