LGI Shorty -- A New Kind of LGI

The LGI run has come and gone, nothing left but the 1-watt LS "rejects". What to do with them?

With the uncommonly high Vf of these dimmer Luxeons, I figured they would be able to safely take on even more voltage and turn out pretty bright. And I was right.

I took one of the dimmest Luxeons and installed it in a Legend LX, a very nicely sized and handy flashlight. Running off of 2 x 123 lithiums it made for a 1.55A current draw, nothing to sneeze at. So of course I immediately put it up against two other now-known quantities, the Tuxedo Illuminator and the Arc-SLS 123-pack:

Here are the beamshots in the same order:

And light meter readings?

Arc -- 244 lux

Tuxedo -- 349 lux

LGI Shorty -- 518 lux

Hmmm, so now perhaps a run of LGI Shortys is in order...

Practical: Yes
Runtime: "Should be decent" (?)
Price: ? (What if we send you an LX to mod?)

"I'm interested!" Haven't we done this before?

You know as inexpensive as an LX is, then add postage to get it to you, time ticking by...it's a better idea to just get one that you have.

How much? I just couldn't afford the 5watt Cyan (wanted it bad too!) for the runtime. If this is going to meet that "practical" requirement...I'm in! What do you suppose the damage is going to be? (My wallet, not my wife - I already know what she's going to do!)

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Charlie,

Looks like a great mod, but I seem to be
entering a "runtime" mode. One of my SLS AA's gives me more than six hours runtime at which point it is still as bright as a fresh Inretech.

If you can come up with some way to exceed that in as small a config (but not the LX) I'd definitely be interested.

Still enjoying my "Classic" LGI. With that animal I'm able to temporarily set aside my runtime obsession.

David,

Average LGIs make 600 or more lux. This one's dimmer, but you wouldusually only be able to tell with a light meter. Lights that are 100 lux apart look very much the same to my eye.

Shiftd and Joe,

$50 shipped although I am not sure I have enough emitters left (they have to be dim, high-forward-voltage examples to accept 6V like this).

Gadget,

See my e-mail reply...
