Just had one of the most intense "shakers" I've felt in a long time here in Anchorage...

Intensity/details to come...

Edit: preliminary reports say it happened at 5:17 am approximately 7 miles Southeast of Anchorage (that's why we felt it so good!) with a magnitude of 4.9. A little close to the neighborhood - that's why we felt it so good!

Ok, nothing more to see here - carry on (no tsunami warning)...

It has to be a scary feeling to feel the Earth move under your feet. Glad you are safe and well.

Glad your ok!!

It is scary having the earth move under your feet. It can actually play with your mind when you feel it the first time. Like the sky is falling or something. It's just not suppose to move, you know.

You need to move somewhere safe, like here in So. Calif. :).

Actually the power did go out several hours later - don't know if it was related or not - perhaps the power company checking systems out? I know whenever we have one over a certain magnitude the Alaska Railroad track & facilities have to be inspected. This one would qualify...

I don't mind feeling them here and there, the old theory of the earth releasing energy now and then possibly preventing "the big one" - but once in awhile, depending on the location - they can be freaky!! :aaa:

While it's scary, a 4.8 is, by definition, fairly non damaging except when you are very, very close to the epicenter. Here in middle California we have frequent quakes. I used to get excited, but not any more. My wife will seldom leave her computer unless it's a real long one.

But back on thread...

Good to hear you were shaken but not harmed.

Yup... it's like having the cat jump into bed with you... when you don't have a cat :eek:oo: Swaying around on your feet without any other indication of dizziness (and being quite sober) is a bit off-putting as well.

Strange thing is, all that happened in Las Vegas (Joshua Tree quake). I've not experienced a significant shaker here yet  ....

OK guess I'm weird, I like quakes. I was in a bunch of Geo-science classes in undergrad and always thought quakes and volcanoes were cool.

I was in the North Ridge quake and live in Tokyo so we get them now and again. I've had a few shakes but dealing with the aftermath is more worrisome to me. Riding the wave isn't so bad since there's not a lot I can do about it. I live about 12 floors up and there's no way I'm going to be able to clear that many flights of stairs in the brief period of a quake so I usually just wait them out.

I do however EDC a fair amount of equipment in case I'm in transit and one hits. I also have a BOB by the door of my home and office.
