Longer run times for ROP mods?

I understand that an ROP is basically portable daylight and I'm sure a mod is in my future for that very reason but I was wondering about run time. If run time is the primary concern, what run times can be achieved and what would be the light output limits. Would either using a 2C, 3C or 2D mod make much of a difference?

2D and 2C won't make a difference. 2D with NiMHs might be a better candidate for a "safer" light though (2C uses unprotected Li-Ions). If you want longer runtime, you'll have to goto 4D, or 6D.

Or if you have the equipment, you can bore out (cut grooves into the body of the light on the inside) the Maglite for different power packs like 3D quad bored with 12AAs setup as 6S2P (Fivemega i believe are selling some lights in this config). Or 2 1/2D dual bored for 4 LI-ions 18650 in 2S2P.

I have a standard recipe 2D ROP and a 3D ROP using 4 of those 18650 Li-ions. The 3D is actually a fair bit lighter than the 2D and ALOT brighter. However, it wasn't cheap to build and you need to solve the batterypack problem too (no one on CPF is selling a holder for 4x18650 in 2s2p).

A resistance reduced 2D will run for about 16 minutes with CBP1650s. The 2C for about 22 minutes. 4D for about an hour, 6D will give about 3 hours. All of those times are with the high bulb.

How long will a stock switch Mag85 run on 9AA-3D with 9 CBP1650s?

How long will a stock switch Mag85 run on 9AA-3D with 9 Energizer 2500 niMh?

On 1650s...bit under 30 mins.
On 2500s...bit over 40 mins.

Much brighter on 1650s. Can also use the new Sanyo eneloop AAs...they seem to hold voltage better than Sanyo 2500s but still not as good as CBP1650s. The eneloops are 2000mAh in capacity, and the runtime will probably be just about 35 mins.

A 6D setup will give you the longest runtime, but who would want to carry that? For normal length lights, the following two 6 x Li-Ion setups from Fivemega will give you the longest runtime:

6 x 18650 (no longer available)
6 x 17670 (still available)

Even though it is officially out of production, don't discount using the Mag 6C. They can still be found here and there. They are MUCH smaller than a 6D.
