Don't know for sure, I'd suspect that you might be able to get it running on two batteries; don't know how well it would run though. I run mine on 3 of the Tenergy 3.0 V RCR123 batteries and it runs great. It's a bit of a pain to recharge since their charger only has two slots, so I charge two sets (3 pairs) at a time. The RCR123 batteries are remarkable in their ability to retain a charge, so you really don't have to be too concerned about self-discharge for the spare set.
