Recently a number of new SMJLED products have appeared and caused confusion both between the kind of LED (MJLED, CMJLED, CMJLED2, SMJLED3mm) and the kund of product (cut/uncut raw LED, PR2 base bulb, bi-pin bulb). I hope the discussion will help clarify the situation.
I am doing this from memory. There will be errors. Do not take this as Gospel.
Member who spot errors please post. Members who have bookmarked threads on the older items please post.

MJLED (ISP100mA die)
Most 5mm LEDs project light forward from the dome on top of the LED. Flashtights need the light to go sideways into the reflector. So one day eons ago MJ (EDIT: Michael Jorden (not the basketball star) CPF handle ARCmania /EDIT) ground the top of an LED almost flatto get the light to go sideways. The LED was an ISP 100mA .

MJLED CUT (BATCH 1)
The early LEDs has relatively higher Vf and require Lithium batteries (Energizer L91).

MJLED CUT (BATCH 2 and later)
Low Vf LEDs were selected allowing alkaline batterues to be used. There are reports Lithiums will burn out these LEDs.

MJLED UNCUT
One can also by the ISP LEDs before they were ground down by MJ if wide angle beam not required.

SMJLED (4 die)
A 4 die LED that is brughter than the original is used. It is called the Super MJLED.

EDIT: Wah Wang makes something very similar to the CUT SMJLED.

SMJLED UNCUT
http://theledguy.chainreactionweb.com/product_info.php?cPath=48_52_82&products_id=755

SMJLED PR(2)
Comes in a PR2 bulb. A boost circuit helps extend battery life and allow use of NiMH. Mine dimmed at 2.2V. A raw MJLED would be iseless below 2.7V.

SMJLED2 (Cree Xlamp die???)
A Cree Xlamp die which is even brighter is used.

SMJLED2 BI-PIN (with boost circuit)
A bi pin version of the SMJLED with boost circuit for minimags will come soon. Manufacturer has all the parts, waiting for the phone call to start assembly.

EDIT: WPR2
The MJLED is a cool white and the SMJLED tint is more blue. TrueBlue sells a variant of the SMJLED PR2 using a warmer tint called the WPR2. See post #8 of this thread for more info.

SMJLED2 SS PR
To avoid confusion with the SMJLED PR2 This bulb from the Sandwich Shoppe has been renamed SS PR.
http://theledguy.chainreactionweb.com/product_info.php?cPath=48_52_82&products_id=853
http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=128801
Note the SS PR is 1/2 watt and all other LED lights Newbie has are 3W or better.
Edit: The SS Pr also seem to have a warmer tint than the original SMJLED. Beamshot comparison on post #52 of above link.
Edit: Newbie took an SS PR apart and it is not a Cree Xlamp die.

EDIT: SMJLED PR 4cell is in production and will be availabe soon.

SMJLED 3mm
A 3mm LED together with a very thin boost circuit is required for the Solitaire.

Re: SMJLED confusion

Excellent compilation! LEDninja. I bought a bunch of the original MJLEDs and retrofitted all my minigags and those of my friends. I bought some of the later ones too. It was a cool concept to take selected lowVf LEDs and modify them for reflectored lights. Mike Jordan! He's been out here doing cool stuff for a long time. A couple times the published spec's...... :D

:tsk: Sigfried.

(couldn't help it, either:laughing:....................sorry)

MJ is also known as "ArcMania"!

LEDninja,

Great idea to assemble all this info in one place!:)

To add to the confusion, you may want to add the WPR2 that TrueBlue was (and will be again) selling in this thread: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb...00&page=1&pp=30

Look about halfway down the post #1.

In post #59 of this thread: https://www.candlepowerforums.com/posts/1559114#post1559114 I pose the question of whether the WPR2 uses the same led as the SMJLED2 SS PR.

Note these common characteristics: single die, smaller hotspot and warmer colors.

Food for thought.

WPR &4 cell PR added to post 1.
The variants of MJLEDs are multiplying like rabbits down under!

Now I can finally upgrade my rebranded Turtlelight without turning it into a floodlight.

The main advantage of the SMJLED PR is the bulb will focus properly in fixed focus reflectors.

Other PR2 base bulbs that focus properly:
LEDcorp JM45-2PR-W, JM45-3PR-W, JM45-4PR-W. DIM. It was cheaper for me to buy a rebranded Turtlelight and steal the bulb than to buy from LEDcorp. That was 5 years ago. Do not know if current models still ose the LEDcorp bulb.

Sino Union NPLB-128 as used in their Starlite flashlights. DIM. They were supposed to make a -256 for use in single cell torches but I was unable to get one.

The LEDcorp Epieon® and EverLED Lamberton should also focus properly I'm not paying $40 for a 1 W bulb when I can get a SL propoly 4AA lux for$32 or less.

The following does not focus froperly:
All bulbs from SuperbrightLEDs

NiteIze PR bulb

All side emitter Luxeon bulbs.

Much appreciated and informative post delineating the history surrounding the
"MJLED" breakthrough series, modders have enjoyed and the later SMJLED PR 2's us beginners use as clever "upgrade mod's."

This is where our fun is and thanks to MJ-Arcmania, Lambda, True Blue and this creative band of Genii for simplifying our lives and adding true
value to us when we give to our circle of friends and family, (who look at us CPF'rs sideways) till we give them an upgraded, bright, little light better than they got, that runs forever. Where's the competiton here? Talk's cheap, challenge them, and we'll buy yours too!

Thanks band of Genii for creating these great bulbs and that's the Truth!
At a CPF Super price, even I can afford in multiples! :goodjob:

LED Ninja, many thanks for this service I will bookmark it, Marlite

Slight side issue ...

I exchanged a dead 1w "Luxeon" led for a SMJLED (non PR2).

Straight solder in place, no extra heatsink.

I have been running it now on 3.6v for a couple of months intermittently.

It gives comparable output to previous 1w "Luxeon".

No signs of failure yet, but only a couple of hours RT.

Does get slightly warm, but no warmer than other "Luxeons"

Approx 2 hours RT from 2,000 nimh's, continuous.

I wonder whether a 2 cell PR2 SMJLED would cope with higher volts, albeit I gather that there is a boost circuit in the PR2 base.

Thanks for this!

I don't really know about the number of die and such. I just know that the SMJLED PRs I got from TrueBlue and Lambda several weeks ago are GOOD STUFF!

I understand from another thread that we can now get a warmer tint SMJLED PR SS that has WAY less runtime....

NOT ME!!!

Anyhow, THANKS!!!

I agree 1000%
No matter how many variations of the SMJLED come forth, NEVER, EVER discontinue the original. I LOVE my far reaching, side spilling Coleman with the SMJLED, and 2D is gonna see alot of runtime.

both of these links go to pages with what appears to be regular MJ LED upgrages.

i am interested in upgrading two - 2AA mini mags, but would prefer the SMJLED2 (if possible). i'm still new to all of this, so maybe i missed something.
The thread for the SMJLED2 for the minimag is here.

The original SMJLED2 with Cree 1 watt die had problems. The 5mm LED form factor just cannot get rid of the heat fast enough and the LEDs were burning out. See this thread. The tint was very yellow compared with the MJLED/SMJLED.

The problem seems to be solved in different ways. The SS PR had the current reduced to a safer level. With the bi-pin it looks like the designers went back to the 4 die SMJLED.

Note the description says MJ 2-AA Module kit. It means MODULE KIT designed by Michael Jordan (not the basketball player but ARCmania on CPF) and does not specifically reference any led. From the tint and brightness of the one I got I guess it is the 4 die SMJLED. The reflector I got produces some artifacts. I ended up using my spare terralux reflector which has less throw but a smoother beam.

There are 3 generations of MJ upgrades for the minimag:
MJLED raw LED. You have to drill out your reflector. instructions. You should use CONDITIONED lithium batteries for optimum results.
SMJLED 4 die raw LED. You have to drill out your reflector. instructions. You should use CONDITIONED lithium batteries for optimum results.
MJ module kit with boost circuit and reflector. This will work with NiMH or semi-used alkalines.

Conditioned lithium batteries are Energizer e2 L91/L92 batteries that have been used in another device for a few minutes to bring the voltage down from 1.8V to 1.6V.
