I am a dog lover, and can't get out of my mind the recent mass slaughter of dogs in southwestern China, as well as the reports that more may occur soon: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060810/hl_afp/chinaanimalhealth_060810080130

I wanted to at least do something, and found this form e-mail on the Humane Society of the U.S.'s website: https://community.hsus.org/campaign/china_slaughter?source=gabat5, which makes it easy. I've got to believe that some attention and disapproval from the rest of the world may eventually spur the Chinese government to take some action.

Hope you'll join me.

Thanks.

If random Nigerians have trouble convincing the majority of Americans that they (the Nigerians) need urgent help transferring millions of dollars and will pay a big reward, how much luck do you think random Americans will have convincing the socialist (not communist) Chinese government that they (the Chinese) should make a huge policy shift because we tell them that they should?

If I may quote from Robert A. Heinlein's "Starship Troopers":

"Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst."

The only thing today's Chinese (or other hostile) government will understand is the proverbial (it SHOULD be a proverb, anyway) grenade up the tailpipe. They won't be bothered by a few million emails.

Any government that massacres such a beautiful and innocent creature as the dog really, really needs a large number of self-propelled, laser-guided grenades launched up its collective tailpipes.

(Mods: I feel extremely strongly about this issue, but if this post is too much, ask me and I'll remove it.)

I think the dog slaughter is China was brought out due to a big spike in Rabies. People were literally walking their dogs when the police would walk up, snatch the dog and kill it. Not exactly the way we would do things in the Western world, but I don't think for a minute that on the grassroots level we can have much influence on their government policies. I like dogs, but I'm more concerned at the infanticide of female babies by Chinese families who desparately want a male baby as their only State allowed child. I've also read that families that have a second baby, the baby is injected in the skull with formaldahyde as the head is crowning during the birth. The birth is then reported as stillborn.

Sorry the drag the topic off center a bit.

the worst part of the ordeal is that in some cases, due to lack of funding and personel, owners are required to kill their own dogs. Now remember in China no one is allowed to own guns or poison, so you connect the dots. Must be traumatizing for the owners to, um, personally carry out the order.

the Western world isn't all that different... Remember all the chicken killed to prevent bird flu? Or 1000s of cows killed to prevent mad cow disease from spreading. Oh, and the pigs were killed en masse too... Were all these animals sick? no, they were just living within a certain range from an infected animal.
European governments decided to kill the animals, while vaccinating was a good alternative. Why kill them then? Because the US refused to buy meat from vaccinated animals from the EU...
Even though the emotional impact of the events in china will be a lot bigger, as dogs are primarily held as pets, I think that the western governments aren't doing much better.

But as I love animals, I took the time to go to the local animal shelter to sign their petition against the things going on in china in person...

rabies mmmm:ohgeez:

Havent anyone thought why the US killed millions of chickens from just a few cases of bird flu?

I've had chickens for pets now for awhile....I don't think theres any similar aspect between chickens and dogs to make a logical comparison:laughing:

In china, dog's [unfortunatly] are classified more as food than pets there, and because of the strict government regulation the people can only conform and comply with the govt's rules and its policies in terms of rate of action. :sigh:

similarily, in US, chickens are a main source of food, but so one mentioned any action to be done about the slaughter of chickens....:candle:

China is slaughtering dogs for the protection of their owners, in US we kill chickens to protect our consumers, simple logic :touche:

I have to agree here, I am much more troubled by the infanticide than the dog slaughter....

For all who said, why bother, it won't make any difference---of course you may be right.

For all who said, there's a bigger problem to address---maybe so, hope you put your efforts there.

For all who have a soft spot for dogs, like I do, thanks very much for your help! :goodjob:

Yes, I hugged my dog today. :)

He smelt cute, like a puppy should. He is probably digging half way to China right now, hope he doesn't actually make it!!
