How risky is it to use protected R123's in a Fenix P1?

I just placed an order with 4Sevens this afternoon for a Fenix P1, and have been reading all the threads i can on this little gem, i didn't realize it when i bought it, but it *can* run on recargable 123's, however, Fenix doesn't reccomend it....

how much risk would i be taking running protected 123's in it, will it accelerate the aging of the LED prematurely or damage/fry the internals, i know the LED will generate more heat on a PR123, is this due to overdriving the LED, will i be slowly killing the light feeding it PR123's?

Fenix says that it is designed to take up to 4.0v and can utilize R123's. I wouldn't worry about it.
