Does anyone know if I can safely attach a 7.2v Li-ion to the silva L1?

Hello enscor:)

Welcome at CPF:grin2:

Since the Silva L1 is build for 6V, it works great with 4xnimh cells, AA or Baby.
When you don't want to risk the driver or the led, don't do it.
Your LiIon-pack will come more than 8V out of the charger and I guess, something will go bad.
Try the new Sanyo eneloop's for less selfdischarge.

Best regards

Thanks. They look great but are only 2000mAh and I'm looking to get as much runtime as I can with as little weight as I use the lamp on my helmet when mountain biking so I'd like to avoid heavy C's. I currently run 2600mAh NiMH vapextech AA's in the C case (with plastic adapters) but this is both a fiddly solution and is on the short side of runtime length.

You have a couple of options really:
  • Try your intended battery pack and hope it does not smoke you light
  • Send an email to silva to find out if the circuit inside the light can handle the extra voltage
  • Buy or get someone to build you a circuit that will step the voltage down from your battery pack
