Hello all,
I have a 3 AAA dorcy stock it came with a supposed 1.5W luxeon. I opened it up and it had a standard lumiled Star module, so i ordered a K2 star and installed it
Now it is much more dim than it was with the stock 1.5W
also it pulls 190mA direct drive, before it was pulling around 290mA direct drive. Do these K2's need 4 cells to pull the supposed 1000-1500mA listed in the spec PDF ?

I am running 1200 mah NIMN at about 4 volts for the pack when fully charged

It is the U00 one notch down from the top, the V00 i could not find in stock. I am wondering if i could maybe convert to the 2 cr123 so i would have 6V

Here are the bin codes, which one is yours? You need to know the last letter in the 4 digit bin code to get the vf.

SOURCE
All white LUXEON, LUXEON K2, LUXEON III and LUXEON V Portable emitters are labeled using the 4digit CAT code format.

ABCD

A = Flux bin (G, H, J, K, etc.)

B and C = Color bin (V0, X0, W0, etc.)

D = VF bin (E, F, G, etc.)

Table 17. Forward voltage bin structure for all LUXEON, LUXEON K2, LUXEON Dental, LUXEON III, LUXEON V and LUXEON V Portable emitters and arrays.

Minimum Maximum
Bin Code (V) (V)
E 2.31 2.55
F 2.55 2.79
G 2.79 3.03
H 3.03 3.27
J 3.27 3.51
K 3.51 3.75
L 3.75 3.99
M 3.99 4.23
N 4.23 4.47
P 4.47 4.71
Q 4.71 4.95
R 5.43 5.91
S 5.91 6.39
T 6.39 6.87
U 6.87 7.35
V 7.35 7.83
W 7.83 8.31

i just direct drove one off my computer power supply 5V rail, consumption starts around 800mA and darts up to about 1.1A after about 40 seconds. this test was done with a heatsink and thermal compound. so maybe i sould be putting a led like this in a 4d mag direct drive with Nimh cells ? typical 1.37 cell voltage
or would that be dangerous for the led

there is a sticker on the back of the LED

uwol

UWOL indicates a fV of 3.75 - 3.99 volts. You need to measure how much voltage the flashlight is feeding the emitter to see now if it is underdriven.

It is getting 3.5 under load, when no load the pack sits around 4.04, tried the led with 4 cells, and the aformentioned computer power supply. with the 4 cells the brightness is considerable, and the Ma draw is at about 500 ish
with the 5 v computer supply it is at about 1100 Ma. and the brightness is stunning  this led can handle 1500Ma correct ?

do people "overclock" the vf on the luxeon line of led's ?

Sounds like it is being under driven in your Dorcy. Check for a resistor in series and either remove it or replace it with something smaller.

Yes, people over drive their luxeons all the time. With proper cooling you can drive some of them really hard.

Not to hijack the thread, but I did just that with a 5W, IMS27, custom heatsink and battery shim. It's possible!

RcatR you did it with a Dorcy "metal Gear" flashlight ? here is a link to the one i am refering to http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/dorcy_metalgear.htm

and as for the resistor which was 1 ohm, it has been removed. so it is direct drive K2 U00 getting 4.0v fresh charged cells no load and 3.5v Under load pulling 190 mA, im starting to think these k2's need 5V, not the 3.99v the bin code states.

Also will 2X cr123 FIT in place of a 3X AAA holder ?
