My personal preference is diagonally.

Not cut when feeling really lazy, or knife has gone into wash pot before I cut it.

When you don't cut it, theres more usable space to put stuff on..
..... i`ll second that....:)

BTW toast is great, i have at least 4 slices a day, it has to be at least 1" thick wholemeal and VERY well toasted
..... one of my favourite recepies .... Have a large clove of garlick and some of your favourite grated cheese to hand, as soon as the toast is ready take the clove of garlick and scrub it vigourously across the crisp toast surface, lob on the cheese and re-grill for a couple of minutes ..... mmmmmm
....... fresh banana slightly mashed is a nice toast topping... try it !!

I have never seen toast cut into quarters. Is this common anywhere?

I'm not too picky, but I guess I do prefer it cut diagonally.

It's nice with bacon, cut into quarters.

A bacon butty, quartered, leaves the nice soggy corner of toast able to enter mouth first, without touching cheeks, and leaving crumbs.

I don't cut my toast, but sometimes you get a sandwich on HUGE slices of bread, and if I had to choose a half, I'd choose to have it cut vertical. Diagonal slices leave too much surface area open and risk losing ingredients. Horiaontal slices are out, too, because you risk getting the top, which could be too crispy, or the bottom, which could be too soft. A vertical cut gives you some of both, the best possible option.

where ever the mice nibbled it..

at my house "hello" is synonymous with "have a slice of toast?" ( greased with 'smart balance' )
