Are you sure my U2 won't take an 18650?

When I first recieved my U2 and posted about it, a few people stated that I couldn't use 18650s'. Mine seems to have considerable slack around the batteries. Heres' the pic. How big is an 18650 anyway?

From this picture I would say it is nowhere close to taking one. Measure 18-19mm to test for 18650 fit.

Here's an 18650-compatible tube to compare with. This is a battery station primary, same diameter as the SF cell you're using. You can see how much more room there is.

Here's an 18650 in the same U2 for comparison.

Hope that helps,

sorry to be the bearer of bad news, that's a downer. A 17670 will always work well, just not as much runtime.

There is a voltage capped RCR123 that will work, but it has less runtime than a regular RCR123 and I would not recommend it.

Your best bet is to get 17670 Li-ion cells. They will have about 30% less runtime than an 18650, but will otherwise perform as well.

The runtimes with a 17670 will be pretty close to what you get with two good CR123 cells, but may still come up a little bit shorter. A big advantage of the 17670 is you can always leave the house with a topped up cell, instead of guessing where you might be in remaining CR123 life and having to carry a couple extras just to be safe.

An 18650 is supposed to be 18 mm in diameter and 65 mm long. If you are unlucky, you might get one which is 18.2 mm.

The are three generations of the U2. The first one was bored for 18 mm batteries, which lead to normal CR123's rattelling inside. The next generation had the same bore, but with a plastic cylinder inside, to prevent ratteling. If your 18650 rattles inside, you have an "large" gen 1 or small 18650 batteries.
