I need to pick one up for an early Christmas gift. It will be used for surf fishing at night. Apparently the red or green LEDs do not attract the bugs like the white LED light. Thanks.

sharp,

not many headlamp manufactures acually use red LED's.... sadly not many even use red light...

However, there are some Petzl models that offer flip down, red visors... to convert the LED emitted light into more of a red light... I own the Tikka XP Desert (came w/ the red filter) and its my "get ready while the wife is sleeping headlamp" its really nice.

if you choose one of the tactikka models (not the XP) be sure that you are buying it with the 2x brighter nichia LED's.. they should say on the package... some discounted models of older versions might have the older LED's...

I think it is a very clever design, especially with the accessory kit. Lots of different mount options including magnet mount. I keep one in each vehicle. Headlight with red, low & high white and emergency strobes (4 different patterns including programmed SOS in morse code). From the Off position it goes to either red or low white so your night vision does not take a big hit either way. You can also leave if off in between other modes. High white is pretty good flood, but not quite the throw of say an X5 -- but you really don't need much throw unless you are doing search and rescue or climbing. It is very good around camp, household or vehicle emergency. Like most Inova products, a lot for the $. You can get 'em for about $35 with the accesory kit, less without.

I am thinking about going with the Streamlight Buckmaster Trident Headlamp. It has the green LEDs. Does anyone have experience with the Streamlight Trident?

I have the Energizer headlamp with the red LEDs and I like it. Unfortunately I have been having some on/off issues with it. I am hoping the Streamlight will stand up the corrosion of the salt water since it will be used for surf fishing.
