I just started scanning about two years ago, i own a radioshack pro 62, its pretty good, but i want to get something better. I was looking at the icom R2, do you know anything about it, reviews, or do you have any other suggestions, i have about a $300 price range.

Specialist, see www.strongsignals.net, the best scanner ref on the web. The first thing you will need to decide is the frequency range you want to monitor, and the quality of antenna(s) you'll be able to erect. Icom's are good, I had an R10, can't tell you much about the R2. Now use a Yupiteru MVT7100, best radio I've ever had.

Can you give me any advice on Frequency counters? I was looking at the optoelectronics Cub or the Tech Toyz Freq Counter. BTW great website, thanks for the info.

Yes, I can. Never had an Opto Cub, but I have owned an Opto TechToyz and an Opto Scout. Don't bother with the TechToyz, apply the money you would have spent on it on an Opto Scout. The Scout will run circles around the TechToyz. Also, if you buy a receiver like the Icom R10 or AOR8200, the Scout can automatically tune the receiver to the freq detected by the Scout. I used to do this, extremely cool.

If you haven't already, read the articles here regarding the Scout: http://www.optoelectronics.com/articles.htm

Much less sensitive than the Scout, only stores 3 frex, can't autotune, and when the Techtoyz detects a signal, it cannot alert you. The Scout can flash the light, vibrate, or beep. The Scout has a standard BNC antenna connector, the Techtoyz has a 3/32" jack, you must make a converter cable to attach it to a standard antenna. The antenna that comes with the Techtoyz is a joke.

No, I haven't. Nice looking radio, though. Maybe Rich Wells ( strongsignals ) will do a review soon.
