Default What exactly is a custom flashlight?

This might sound like a dumb question... I have been a member of CPF for over nine months and I still do not understand the difference between a custom light and production light. What is a custom flashlight?

Have a think about it in relation to something being custom made as opposed to being of factory production. Its the same difference as buying a tailored suit as opposed to one off the peg at a department store.

Custom would refer to anything which has been changed from a stock flashlight. The amount of change can be anything from a different bulb, to a different finish on the exterior. Custom could even be a completely hand made light.

Are there actually hand made lights? I thought they were all machine-made.

Hand made using machines to cut the metal. I used the term, perhaps improperly, to suggest only making a few of something. Hand made meaning not using automated machinery to make thousands of the various parts.

when in doubt - go to the dictionary

Some people consider it a light that the creator actually worked on...Not just a factory.

i guess it depends on how you look at it. there are some special limited lights like the porcupines from sf (though im not sure if you actually call them special edition) or some from pk himself. they still came out straight from the factory. i dont consider them as "custom" though. a custom to me is something like mcgizmo's or electro-lumens line, something you cant buy just anywhere else.

"Custom" here on CPF is a somewhat fluid and misused term. I think you should also include "semi-custom" in between the categories of custom and production. Semi-custom is probably equivalent to "customized". I think the nature of flashlight technology makes it very difficult for a light to be truly custom since folks aren't making their own lamps, LEDs, o-rings, circuitboards, etc. A CPFer may machine a body, but will use other readily manufactured parts to complete the light. Likewise, some CPFers design many aspects of the light and may machine a prototype, but what is sold is "produced" from a machine shop. Or a CPFer may design a circuitboard, but the design is sent off to silicone valley or Asia for fabrication. So I think for most cases, aspects of lights are custom made, but the end product should be considered "semi-custom".

The definition of a "production" light is a somewhat fluid term as well. For large companies like Maglite, Surefire, and Streamlight, there is little argument on CPF that these lights are considered "production". There seems to be a little disagreement on smaller scale operations, say between HDS and McGizmo. CPFers tend to say Henry's HDS is production, while McGizmo's lights are semi-custom. Both have designed much of their lights from scratch or in collaboration, both have their machining outsourced, both sell their lights on websites, and both have similar sales volumes. Why the difference?

    Good question, by the way!

I would consider a flashlight "custom" If it were ordered with special features, such as a special bin emitter, Ti bezel rings, or tritium. Using a Mclux III PD as an example I would not consider the basic unit sold as is to be a custom flashlight.
