Let\'s talk guns. Favorite round.

Got off topic in another thread. Maybe get something going here.
I do my tests on old punky(semi-rotted) pine, wet after a rain. I don't have ballistic gelatin. I used a .45 cal Kimber(crap.don't buy one). A FMJ @750 fps penetrated 16in, with no deformation. The golden Sabre +P @1000+fps went 7in with a perfect mushroom.
More tests to follow on Pro-load, Triton, Hydro-shok, Silver tip and more misc rounds picked up here and there.

P.S. David. If this is not Kosher, let me know and erase this.

Well, since I only use my guns at the range, I'm a fan of Winclean 9mm. It's relatively light-recoiling, leaves little residue, and the SWC bullets leave nice clean holes in the paper. Now if I could just keep all those little holes closer together I would be happy

Re: Let\'s talk guns. Favorite round.

was involved in a shooting about 5 years ago against four criminal types in Indiana between Indianapolis and Greenfield. At the time I alway either carried 45acp Corbon 185 or 9x19 115. That day I was carrying 9x19. 9x19 didn't do well against barriers. 9x23 penetrates in non fluid items better than either 9x19 or 45acp but opens and comes to a stop in fluid material. Sometimes cutting barrier material is a good thing, sometimes not so must be careful. no magic bullet out there yet

Actually, I've been waiting for DavidW (the owner of this BB) to give his blessing about this "thread" before I respond. I belong to a dozen or so forums, but I've not joined the various gun BBs out there yet. I've only got but so much time.

The Stopping Power Community forum, hosted by retired Detroit Homicide Detective Evan Marshal who co-authored 2 definitive books with Deputy Sheriff Ed Sanow on bullet effectiveness, would be a good place to discuss this topic.

With ALL due respect for David, I'll wait.

In the interim, I'll just say that I'm a ".45 man," 230-grain in 5" barrel and 185-grain, +P in shorter "tubes."

David, I feel your pain- if you start asking around for opinions on a semi-basic 1911 you can find pretty much exactly as many pro-springfield-anti-kinber folks as the pro-kimber-anti-springfield folks.

Besides, forget that 100-year old technology and get a Glock! (I'm JUST KIDDING- that's the kind of flame-bait comment you really don't see on this excellent forum)

Re: Let\'s talk guns. Favorite round.

David. Let me explain my comment on Kimber to clear thing up. I read a few gun zines a month and I kept seeing all the good things being written on Kimber getting in on the 1911 line. All the improvments/upgrades being offered up front at a good price. I had never had nor fired a .45 before but talking to other folks calmed my fears about heavy recoil on this large bore round. O.K. Kimber it is. I read a glowing review on the hi-cap and said "that's for me". I got home and tried it out. Loved it. Recoil was modest and the trigger was crisp. After 300 or so rounds I was getting jams(nose up and failure to go into battery). I stripped and cleaned it. Everything good to go. But than it seemed to crap up every 100 or so rounds. O.K. I can live with that. Than the finail straw. After about 2000 rounds the hammer will not stay back. I did a complete strip for cleaning and replaced the sear spring. No go. Called Kimber and the rep seemed annoyed like I was taking time away from her crossward puzzle. Had to DRAG the address from her. I have the pistol all boxed up for shipment cannot decide if to send it to Kimber or Dawson Precision for repair.(Dawson builds low profile mounts to attach Surefire torchs)P118)). Anyway, to make a long story short(to late), I cannot reccomemd Kimber at this time. P.S. I tried the Kimber forum but no text appears on the black backgroud so I joined the 1911 forum. Thank you David for allowing this thread. Hope to have some fun here.

To CPF members, sorry about the whine factor but the damn thing cost me $900.

Really Springfield Armory is made in Brazil??? WOW, did know that, thanks for the info. I was looking at the Springfield civilian model of FBI HRT MODEL, guess i will just get a glock in .45 a lot cheaper and more reliable, i can also get higher capacity magazines.
BTW How are Wilson Combats?

I have a Kimber custom target and it is the best damned gun out of any .45 !! Name one gun with tighter tolerances than that. If you say springfield i will have to slap you (You know SPRINGFIELD "the oldest name in american firearms" ... made in brazil) The only thing i would trade the kimber for is an original 1911

Actually, i was wondering if you have had any problems with Ti a firing pin- I thought the brittleness of Ti could be a problem.

Re: Let\'s talk guns. Favorite round.

I use Golden Saber ammo. A police friend says that HydroShock doesn't test as well as Golden Saber.

Any thoughts on these two ammos???

Re: Let\'s talk guns. Favorite round.

James. They are both great rounds. Read the gun zines and Federal and Remington always tests good. Accuracy varies from gun to gun so test to find out whats the best for your's. I use both. Maybe KT can get us all some of his Black Talon although I have read that Ranger Talon SXT(sp?) is the same load.
Have fun.

I have about 2000 rounds with the Ti firing pin (Titanium Nitride coated actually) without failure.

Re: Let\'s talk guns. Favorite round.

Wow - I found people that like Flashlights and Guns - sometimes flashlights on guns. Anyways, I'm looking to buy my first gun. I've never fired a .45 so I'm leaning towards a 9mm. I kinda like the Bul M-5 because you can buy the frame and any caliber with a conversion kit. I figure this way I can always buy the .45 kit at a later time. Can I do this with any others? Any opinions on the Bul? BTW - I read that Bul makes the frame for the Kimber Polymer and Charles Daly DDA.

Re: Let\'s talk guns. Favorite round.

mmm..Glock model 30, Meprolight sights and 185gr+P Golden Sabers is what I have. If you like the 230gr better, the HydroShok or the Gold Dot are both excellent rounds.
I must admit however that my current duty arm is the S&W 625 Mountain Gun in 45 Colt with 225gr Silvertips.

It fits right in my Safariland L frame holster and with small grips and a Tyler T-grip it looks small until it comes out of the holster and then it looks positivly huge!
