I've still got one I bought around 15 years ago. It is a rachet mechanism. You insert the driver bit into the appropriate side of the ball to drive or remove a screw. The only downside I found was it's harder to use once the screw is loose (sounds like a cliche here

- since the ball is much smaller than a regular screwdriver handle). But once the screw takes hold, you get a lot of torque from the rachet.

hey yea my father in law has one looks like it is a 100 yrs old (he is hard on tools) still works like a charm although I don't like the slotted bit much.
